WPA Projects - Park Pavilions

A supplement to the feature story from the June/July 2008 issue of Decatur Magazine.

Project #1: Mueller Park Pavilion, 610 Marion Street

Project #2: Nelson Park Bathhouse, 2301 East Lake Shore Drive

Project #3: Fairview Park Comfort Station, 1300 West Eldorado

The Historic and Architectural Sites Commission offers a brochure detailing the features of the city's WPA Era Park Pavilions, included in a package titled "Historic Decatur Illinois Walking Tours." It’s available at the Decatur Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 202 East North Street.

For more information on WPA projects, go to: http://www.wpamurals.com. Click on the "IL" link to view photos of murals created for the Decatur post office under the WPA's Federal Art Project. When straight-talking WPA Director Harry Hopkins was quizzed on the necessity of federal support for the arts, he retorted: "Hell! They've got to eat just like other people."
