The new book, Decatur: Illinois' Central City, was released at the Annual Meeting of the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce held on May 17, 2007 at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. Published by Decatur Magazine, the 200-page book offers a comprehensive view of this point in Decatur's history by detailing the community's quality of life and vision for the future. A limited quantity of first edition copies of the book are available for purchase at the chamber office located at 111 E. Main Street in downtown Decatur at the cover price of $75.00 for the general public and discounted rate of $50.00 for chamber members.

Decatur, Illinois is a unique place. Geographically, the city is located smack dab in the middle of things. With acres of farm fields and prairie, Decatur typifies the nation's heartland. New products and innovative technologies are developed in Decatur, and a vast network of roads and rails efficiently link the city's products with global destinations to feed and fuel the world.

But there’s a softer side to the city, too, and it is defined by the spirit of the people who live and work in Decatur. Their energy, optimism, talent, vision, and just plain hard work form the true heart of Decatur, and guide the city’s future direction.

Decatur: Illinois' Central City, captures the essence of the community with engaging narrative by authors Jan Mathew, Pam Henderson and Kelly Wingard, and a dramatic visual portrait created by graphic designer and art director, Shani Goss.

"The end result is a book that will be used as a tool by local business and industry to transform perceptions of Decatur's quality of life, and serve as an historical keepsake for the community," said Beth Stringer, publisher of the Decatur book.

Proceeds from sales of the book will be used to enhance chamber programs and services for the Decatur business community.
