| Vineyards
have increased 24 percent since 1997 to 13,500 acres, making Michigan
the fourth largest grape-growing state in the country. About 1,500
acres are devoted to wine grapes, placing the state eighth in wine
grape production. According to the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry
Council, there are 40 commercial wineries producing more than 200,000
cases of wine annually, attracting more than 600,000 tourists and contributing
$75 million to the states economy per year.
