Splash" in the April/May 2010 issue of Decatur Magazine.
Each year, independent judges throughout the country grow and test new
garden varieties of flowers and vegetables for home gardens. The judges
release their favorites as All-America Selections (AAS) the following
spring. The 2010 award winners include:
- Endurio Sky Blue Martien a clear blue spreading/mounding
viola that looks delicate, but beats the competition in wind and rain.
Perfect for window boxes, hanging baskets, and containers.
- Zinnia Double Zahara Cherry resistant to leaf spot
and mildew, two diseases that often plague zinnias. The large double
rose-colored blooms and dark green foliage are lovely when planted
with other full sun plants in beds or containers.
- Zahara Starlight Rose Zinnia stunningÊdeep pinkÊand
white flowers. Also resistant to leaf spot and mildew, and is heat
and drought tolerant. Mature plants are 12 to 14 inches tall and wide,
and are easilyÊgrown from seeds.
- Double Zahara Fire disease resistant with large double
flowers in rich orange. The more these zinnias are deadheaded, the
more they flower. They're wonderful as cut flowers.
- African Marigold Moonsong Deep Orange blooms in a unique
golden orange. Plants are vigorous in heat or drought, and do not
need to be deadheaded.
- Gaillardia Mesa Yellow prolific blanket flower. The
3-inch daisy-like flowers bloom early, offer continuous color throughout
the summer, attract butterflies, and are beautiful in bouquets.
- Compact Snapdragon Twinny Peach double flower form
in soft shades of peach, yellow, and light orange.
